Coming off the second round win against Carolina University the Royals got to face the #6 seed Grace College. Grace is the tournament host which made this contest an informal senior night for the Lancers.
The game started off fast for the Lancers jumping to an early 17-4 lead. Coach Tonya Ingram knew being on Grace's home court that the Lancers were going to be hitting their shots; but the Royals responded. Sparked by a Gabby Adams three, the Royals went on a 12-3 run comprised of another Adams three, a Madison Bailey three, and an Alysia Pickett three. This drew the scores to 20-16 before ending the quarter 25-19 with the Royals trailing. The Lancers offense stayed hot scoring more than 20 points in every quarter, and the Royals unfortunately played their best basketball in the first. The teams entered halft-time with GC leading EC 47-28.
The Royals continued to struggle on offense despite never giving up. They fought hard and battled the entire 40 minutes, but the hot shooting of the host school never stopped. The Royals would fall in their final game of the season 50-97.
Gabby Adams: 14 points, 4 rebounds, 4-8 3P
Alysia Pickett: 16 points, 3 assists, 4-9 3P
Grace Crawford: 7 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block
The Royals ended their season taking 6th place in the NCCAA D1 WBB National Tournament. This comes after an 11 year abscence. What's next for these ladies is high expectations following this great season. They have no seniors and the vast majority of the minutes played were by players who had never played together before. They constantly battled teams with much more experience, built in chemistry, and years of playing together. What this young, new team accomplished is very significant. Stayed tuned, because this program is only starting to find its stride.
