Greg Gaffney   |   -

Coach Gaffney comes to Ecclesia with a combined college, high school and international competition career record of 491-199 as a head coach of both men’s and women’s teams. He started his coaching career as a Moody Bible Institute graduate student serving as a volunteer assistant men’s coach for one year, then moved into the role of Intramural Director/Special Instructor and Assistant Men’s Coach the following season. At the conclusion of that academic year, he was named head coach of the men’s team, where over the next nine years the team went 147-112 with 8 NCCAA Div. II playoff appearances including 1 final eight finish. He and his staff developed 2 NCCAA Division II First Team, 3 Second Team and 1 Honorable Mention All-Americans during that time.

In the middle of that run, he was asked to take over the women’s program while still leading the men’s program. He oversaw the women’s program for two years, with a two-year record of 37-16, going to the NCCAA Division II National Tournament both years, finishing 4th the first year and winning the National Championship the next. He and his staff also developed three more NCCAA All-Americans in those two years, and he was named the NCCAA District IV Division II Coach of the Year in 1986.

During this period, he had the opportunity to coach Moody and some national teams in international competitions against college and professional teams, compiling a 47-16 record, the highlight being 10-0 against professional teams in the Ukraine in 1992, partnering with Coach Kirk Hanson, then of Central Bible College, in leading the first NCCAA All-American Team to go abroad.

After 18 years in pastoral and para-church ministry away from his successful college coaching career in Chicago, Reverend Gaffney was asked to take over a struggling small high school girls program in northern New Jersey. His return to head coaching has resulted in a 260-54 record over the last eleven years while building the girls' program at Veritas Christian Academy into one that has received national recognition including a NCSAA #1 Final Ranking in Division 3 in 2020, and him honored as the NCSAA Girls Basketball 2020 National Coach of the Year. His last team at Veritas finished ranked #7 overall in the NCSAA in 2021. He and his staff produced 1 NCSAA All American, 5 NCSAA Northeast Super Region Team members, 9 Metro Christian Athletic Association MVPs and 33 MCAA All Conference Team honorees. As happy as he is for all the league, mideast region and national championships Veritas has won during this time, he is even more pleased with the 6 MCAA Christian Character Awards his teams were awarded.

Coach Gaffney wants to thank President Mike Novak and Athletic Director John Newlun for the opportunity to continue building into the Royals women’s program, with Ecclesia College’s emphasis on striving for excellence in all things combined with a Biblical foundation that honors our Lord and Savior!
